Facts About Balloons

Latex balloons are natural. They are not made of plastic. They will decompose as fast as an oak leaf in your back yard. Balloons come from a rubber tree. The latex is collected by cutting the bark of the tree with a knife and catching the latex in a cup as it drips out. (It doesn't hurt the tree.) Balloons help the earth. Many rubber trees grow in the rain forests. Each rubber tree can produce latex for about 40 years. Collecting latex discourages people from cutting down rubber trees. Latex is a vegetable. Balloons were invented the same year as the electro-magnet (1824).
The country that produces the most latex is Malaysia. Helium-filled balloons float because helium is a gas that is lighter than nitrogen and oxygen, the two gasses that make air.
